11 Days of riding pleasure through Swaziland, Lesotho and South Africa

This exciting motorcycle tour focuses on riding the best roads in the world. We twist our way through spectacular mountain passes, traverse spectacular Kingdoms and ride our way through african savannah, stopping only to take in the sights, view african wildlife and learn more about ancient African Cultures.

This  Motorcycle tour takes  place in Mpumalanga, (often referred to as Bikers paradise) the Kruger National Park, Kingdom of Swaziland, St. Lucia (Hippo and Crocodile Paradise, Kwazulu Natal Battlefields, the Drakensberg Mountains and Lesotho- the “Alps of Africa”


Day 1: Pretoria to Hazyview (+-400)
Ride North East to Bikers Paradise in Mpumalanga. Enjoy an African Feast and Dancing

Day 2: Ride the Panorama Route (+-250km)
Ride the famous Sabie Triangle, explore the Panorama Route, visit view sites and waterfalls.

Day 3: Kruger National Park Safari (0-50km)
Enjoy a safari into the World Famous Kruger National Park, look out Lions, Elephants, Rhino, Buffalo and Leopard.

Day 4: Kruger to Swaziland (+-310km)
Ride the Mountainous Kingdom of Swaziland, sleep in the Valley of Heaven.

Day 5: Swaziland to St. Lucia (+-350km)
Ride South into South Africa again, sleep in St. Lucia surrounded by hippos and crocodiles

Day 6: Rest Day St. Lucia (0-50km)
Cruise on the Lake, Safari into Hluhluwe,  Relax on the beach- Lots of optional activities to choose from.

Day 7: St. Lucia to Kwazulu Natal Battlefields (+-200km)
Visit historic battle sites commemorating the Anglo- Zulu War. Sleep in Rural Natal.

Day 8: Kwazulu Natal Battlefields to Clarens (+-450km)
Ride through the Drakensberg Mountains and Golden Gate National Park

Day 9: Day Trip to Katse Dam, Lesotho (+-420km)
Ride the "Alps of Africa"- more turns within 80km than any other road in Africa

Day 10: Clarens to Pretoria (+-400km)
Ride the back roads of the Orange Free State

Day 11: End of Tour (0-50km)
Transfers to airport will be arranged. You can  wish to book an add on tour to Victoria Falls or Cape Town


Day 1: Pretoria to Hazyview (+-400km)
Highlights: Scenic mountain passes, Long Tom Cannons

Today you make your way up into Mpumalanga- an area known to local riders as “Biker Paradise”. As you head up north, the roads become mountain¬ous with beautiful views of the rolling hills below. A highlight is riding Long Tom Pass. Enjoy the great twisties and arrive in Hazyview in the last afternoon.

Day 2: Ride the Panorama Route (+-250km)
Highlights: God's Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, The Three Rondavels, Waterfalls, Magical Views Sites

Make your way down into Mpumalanga (an area known to Local Bikers as “Motorcycle Paradise”) the roads here are beautiful and curvy, and there are so many great view points, rock formations and waterfalls along the way. The route includes stops at Bourkes luck potholes, The Three Rondavels, and Gods Window as well as a waterfall or two. We will arrive back in Hazyview in the Late Afternoon. Tonight- you will enjoy a traditional African meal and African dances at the Shangana cultural village (B)

Day 3: Kruger National Park Safari (+-50km)
Highlights: Safari, African wildlife

Today we will bid goodbye to the motorcycles and board a game viewing Safari vehicle which will transport us into the Kruger National Park. This world famous wildlife reserve is home to the BIG 5 and is roughly the size of a small country. The vastness of the park allows ample opportunity to view wild animals in their natural habitat. We will have a full morning to spot lions, elephants, birds and many different species of animals. In the Afternoon we will return to our hotel in Hazyview where we can relax around the pool or take part in any of the optional activities in the area. (B)

Day 4: Kruger to Swaziland (+-300km)
Highlights: Kingdom of Swaziland

After breakfast we depart for the Kingdom of Swaziland – the home of the friendly Swazi people. After border procedures (passport and possibly visa required) we weave our way along winding country roads and mountain passes. Today we will visit Swaziland’s own glass factory (Ngwenya Glass) and see the world famous Swazi candles being handcrafted at Swazi Candles. There are many excellent restaurants, pubs and craft markets in the Ezulweni Valley where we will overnight at an excellent country lodge, with its own magnificent restaurant on a wooden deck with spectacular views. Day 5: Swaziland to St. Lucia (+- 350km)
Highlights: Relaxing drive through African Countryside

Today we make our way through Swaziland to South Africa’s Zulu Kingdom, homeland of the proud Zulu nation. In the late afternoon we arrive in St. Lucia, a world renowned natural heritage site, with its beautiful secluded beaches, hippos, crocs, whales, endangered turtles and other wildlife, our home for the next two nights. This afternoon we embark on an exciting sunset river cruise where we see hippos , crocodiles and other estuary wildlife . Tonight you can explore the many restaurants, pubs and cocktail bars that St Lucia has to offer. (B)

Day 6: Rest Day St. Lucia (+- 0-50 km)
Highlights: Many Exciting Optional Activities

St Lucia has so much to offer that we suggest an action packed day undertaking one of the many optional activities on offer e.g. Whale watching & turtle tours (in season). Full and half day game drives are also available into the magnificent Umfolozi/Hluhluwe game reserve. You can also visit a Zulu cultural village . As all activities are extremely popular, to avoid disappointment, Sama prefers to pre-book activities for you. (B)

Day 7: St. Lucia to Kwazulu Natal Battlefields (+- 200 km)
Tour of famous Anglo Boer and Zulu battle sites

Time to head inland to the battlefields of South Africa, an area of huge historical significance during the famous Boer-Zulu- British Wars. You will arrive at your lodge early in the afternoon, and can then embark on an optional tour of the battlefields with a knowledgeable guide who will bring history of the area alive! (B)

Day 8: Kwazulu Natal Battelfields to Clarens (+-450km)
Highlights: Drakensberg Mountains and Golden Gate National park

After Breakfast you are on the road again, making your way to Golden Gate  National Park, just outside of Lesotho. En-route you stop off at some tourist attractions with lots of photo opportunities. As you pass through the Drakensberg Mountain range, you will notice how diverse South Africa's landscape is. The roads along this stretch are very enjoyable! In the afternoon you will arrive at Golden Gate National Park. The Golden Sandstone cliffs in this park are remarkable and the beautiful road twisting through, will leave you breathless. Tonight you sleep in Clarens, a beautiful little town, hidden in the mountains.

Day 9: Clarens - Lesotho - Clarens (+-410km)
Highlights: Riding the Alps of Africa

On this day you will experience a very exciting ride to Katze Dam in Lesotho. After an early start, you enter the Lesotho border and make your way towards Katze Dam (a huge man made dam that forms part of the Highlands water project which supplies water to South Africa in times of drought) The road to the dam has more turns within 80km than any other road in Africa. A motorcycle riders' dream. The condition of the road is excellent with very little traffic. The Katze Dam is truly eye opening! After lunch you return along the same exciting road arriving back at the hotel in the late afternoon.

Day 10: Clarens to Pretoria (+-400km)
Time to head back to Pretoria, after a scrumptious breakfast you start the journey back! It is a nice relaxing ride through the interior of South Africa. En-route you may wish to stopin  to view the impressive Motorcycle Museum in Deneysville on the Orange River. You will arrive back in Pretoria in the later Afternoon and we will transfer you to your hotel in Pretoria for your last night of tour  (B)

Day 11: End of Tour

Unfortunately all good things must come to an end. We will transfer you to the Johannebsurg Airport. You may also wish to book one of our add on tours such as the Vic Falls fly in Safari or Cape Town City Stay (B)

This ride is suitable for most motorcyclists. +- 99% of the ride is on good tarmac roads. There are also some exciting off road options on good hard packed gravel roads. Daily distances are relatively short ( >450km) , there are rest days scheduled regularly and there are no long border crossings.
90% of this tour takes place on tarmac roads. The dirt roads are good hard-packed dirt. However, there are some long riding days and long border crossing. Some areas we visit are very rural and the roads sometimes have lots of potholes and other hazards. Need to be a confident rider.
This tour takes places 50% on tar roads and 50% on dirt roads. You need to be an experienced rider both on and off the pavement and have completed at least an intermediate riding course on a big Adventure bike- or have a lot of experience riding adventure bikes in your own country
