5 Day GS tour of Lesotho and Sani Pass


5 Day Epic GS Ride through South Africa and Lesotho

This tour is a great adventure for GS enthusiasts OR anyone who likes to explore gravel roads.

Starting in Pretoria you make your way down into the mighty Drakensberg Mountains. Here you ride exciting gravel mountain passes. Next up you tackle the infamous Sani Pass- this road between South Africa and Lesotho is famous with riders around the world for its steep switch-backs and breathtaking views, as you climb from 1,500 to 3,000 metres in just 20km! Once in Lesotho you can congratulate yourself with a beer at the highest pub in Africa!

The next day you ride more epic gravel roads and tar mountain passes through Lesotho to Semonkong. One minute your putting your knee down in the corner of a perfect tarmac road and the next your riding exciting gravel roads through the mountains.

Along the way you will meet traditional Basotho cowboys as they travel by horseback and you will see African huts- made from stone and thatch- dotting the mountainside. The Basotho people are friendly and welcoming.

In Semonkong you sleep in traditional African accommodation (With a bit of Luxury) and can check out the breathtaking Semonkong Falls before returning to South Africa.

Your last night is spent in the artist town of Clarens and you will get to ride Golden Gate National Park past Sandstone rock formations, before returning to Pretoria on day 5


Day 1: Pretoria to Bergville
Ride down through the hinterland of South Africa to the breathtaking Drakensberg Mountains. (+-400km)

Day 2: Bergville to Sani Top
Explore epic gravel passes that wind their way through the mountains and then tackle the famous Sani Pass into Lesotho where you will enjoy a drink at the highest PUB in Africa (+-250)

Day 3: Sani Top to Semonkong 
Today you will discover why we call Lesotho- The Alps of Africa. Put your knee down in the corners on epic tar roads and enjoy challenging dirt roads. (+-370km)

Day 4: Semonkong to Clarens
Visit the famous Semonkong Falls before making your way back into South Africa Again. (+-280km)

Day 5: Clarens to Pretoria
Ride Golden Gate National Park to see the famous Sandstone formations before returning to Pretoria. (+-400km)

Understanding the pricing:

All prices are quoted per motorcycle based on riding 1 up and sharing accommodation. If you would like to bring a passenger add the "Pillion price" to the base price OR if you would like your own room, add the "Single Supplement price" to the base price to get your total.

This tour takes places 50% on tar roads and 50% on dirt roads. You need to be an experienced rider both on and off the pavement and have completed at least an intermediate riding course on a big Adventure bike- or have a lot of experience riding adventure bikes in your own country
90% of this tour takes place on tarmac roads. The dirt roads are good hard-packed dirt. However, there are some long riding days and long border crossing. Some areas we visit are very rural and the roads sometimes have lots of potholes and other hazards. Need to be a confident rider.
This ride is suitable for most motorcyclists. 99% of the ride is on good tarmac roads. There are also some exciting off road options on good hard packed gravel roads. Daily distances are relatively short there are rest days scheduled regularly and there are no long border crossings.
