This is an amazing motorcycle adventure. You will get to ride the best roads in South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland with tons of twisting mountain passes and breath-taking landscapes to explore.

You will also get to enjoy several safaris including; A hippo and croc cruise in St. Lucia, A Safari into Kruger National Park, Rhino Tracking in Matobo Hills National Park, a Big 5 Safari by boat in Chobe National Park and a game drive out onto the Makgadigadi Salt Pans in Nata. Day 0: Arrive in South Africa

Welcome to South Africa.  You will be met by a friendly Sama Tours representative who will transfer you to your Hotel. Relax and unwind after your flight- the motorcycle tour starts tomorrow. There are also many exciting days tours in and around Pretoria if you feel like having a look around.

Pretoria- The Jacaranda City

Day 1: Pretoria to Clarens (+-350km)
Highlights: Clarens, Golden Gate National Park

Today you make your way through South Africa’s orange countryside to beautiful artists town of Clarens.  A great stop en-route is Historical Motorcycle Museum in Deneysville. You will arrive in Clarens in the early afternoon. This whole town is surrounded by golden sandstone cliffs and is a motorcycle riders dream. Explore art galleries, shops and restaurants or enjoy an optional ride down to Golden Gate National Park.

Day 2: Clarens - Lesotho - Clarens  (+-400km)
Highlights: Riding Lesotho - The Alps of Africa

Today you will enjoy a very exciting ride to Katze Dam in Lesotho. The road to the dam has more turns within 80km than any other road in Africa. The condition of the road is excellent with very little traffic. The whole country of Lesotho is located in the mountains with dramatic views around every corner. Meet the beautiful Basotho people- shepherds herding their sheep on horseback, small boys walking their cattle home and kids waving at the bikes around every corner. The Katze Dam is truly eye opening! Enjoy a scrumptious lunch overlooking Katse Dam, before re- riding the same amazing mountain passes all the way back to Clarens.

Sharp Curves- Lesotho

Day 3: Clarens to Kwazulu Natal Battlefields (+-270km)
Highlights: Drakensberg, Kwazulu Natal Battlefields

Today’s ride is unbelievably scenic. Ride down through the Golden Gate National Park. This park is made up of sandstone cliffs, with scenic rocks and other interesting land formations. Watch out for Antelope and Vervet monkeys crossing the road- you’re in the wild here! Next up you travel east to the Kwazulu Natal Battlefields. Here You can visit the Isaldwana  and Rorkes Drift Battlefields to see where British Soldiers fought during the Anglo/Zulu war and learn some incredible war stories along the way.

Day 4: Kwazulu Natal Battlefields to St. Lucia (+-274km)
Highlights: Hippos and crocodiles in St. Lucia

Today you make your way to St. Lucia – a world heritage site. Here there are wild deserted beaches and a lake full of wildlife. This afternoon you enjoy a sunset boat ride to see Hippos and Crocodiles, while enjoying a cold beer or two. Your hotel is located right in the middle of the town full of bars and restaurants. Be careful when walking home, you might see a hippo or two walking down the main street!

Day 5: St. Lucia to Swaziland (+-350km)
Highlights: Swaziland, the Valley of Heaven

Today you make your way North into the beautiful mountainous Kingdom of Swaziland. Enjoy riding beautiful curving roads to the Ezulwini Valley (Valley of Heaven) here you sleep at a beautiful country lodge with views over Execution Rock. Optional stops along the way include the Swazi candle factory and Ngwenya Glass where you can see red hot glass being blown into African shapes.

Day 6: Swaziland to Hazyview  (+-350km)
Highlights: Motorcycle Paradise

Today you travel up North through Swaziland and around Maguga Dam, back into South Africa. Your destination is Hazyview, your home for the next 2 nights. This is a good base to explore Mpumalanga- an area known to local bikers as “Motorcycle Paradise” Here roads twist and turn around the Blyde River Canyon- with beautiful view sites, waterfalls and rock formations around every corner. Mpumalanga is also home to the world-famous Kruger National Park

Day 7: Safari into Kruger National Park (0-200km)
Highlights: Big 5 Safari and optional Twisty ride

Up bright early you will be picked up for a half day safari into the Kruger National Park. Here sightings of the Big 5 are common, so look out for Lions, Rhino, Leopard, Elephant and Buffalo. You will arrive back at your hotel at midday and can relax around the pool or go for an optional “Twisties” ride. There are also several exciting optional activities in the area also including: scenic flights, quad biking, elephant experiences and much more.

Day 8: Hazyview – Panorama Route – Magoebaskloof (+-300km)
Highlights: The Panorama Route- Viewsites and waterfalls

Today is a real highlight of your tour. Start off your day by riding exciting tar mountain passes with long sweeping bends, all the way to Pilgrims Rest, an historical gold mining town. Next up you ride North to explore the beautiful Panorama Route. Stop in to see Berlin Falls, Blyde River Canyon, the Three Rondavels and Bourkes Luck potholes. Tonight, you sleep Magoebaskloof overlooking the beautiful Valley below. (+-300km)

Day 9: Magoebaskloof to Tuli Block, Botswana
Highlight: Sleeping in the wild Tuli Block

Leaving the Wolkberg Mountains behind you ride  beautiful twisting mountain passes down into Tzaneen, before continuing to the Botswana Border. Your hotel for the night is located just over the border in the wild Tuli Block. Enjoy a delicious dinner in the Boma and fall asleep to the sounds of Lions roaring in the distance. (+- 276 km)

Day 10: Tuli Block to Matobo National Park Zimbabwe (+-400km)
Highlights: Big Cave Camp

Today you have an exciting ride to the Zimbabwe border. After clearing the border (patience is key) you make your way up North to Big Cave Camp, your home for the next two nights. Your camp is set around giant boulders in Matabo National Park. This area is famous for ancient Khoi San Rock Art and Matobo National Park has the largest significant population of white and black Rhino in Zimbabwe.  (+-400km)

Day 11: Rest Day Matobo National Park- Rhino Tracking Adventure

Today we have booked you a Rhino Tracking adventure. Enjoy a game drive with a professional guide - this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to creep up on these wonderful animals on foot. Spend the rest of the day relaxing at the lodge. How about a swim in the natural rock pool or a drink at the Leopards Lair Lounge and Bar? The solitude and beauty of this camp will be hard to forget. (0-50km)

Day 12: Matobo National Park  to Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls- the Smoke that Thunders

Today you make your way to Victoria Falls. Locals call it: “The smoke that thunders” and the sheer amount of falling water is an amazing sight to behold. You spend 2 Nights at the falls enjoying all the exciting activities on offer. (+-500km)

Day 13: Rest Day Victoria Falls  (and helicopter flight!)
Highlights: The flight of Angels

This morning we have booked you onto a sunrise flight over the dramatic Victoria Falls. They call this the “Flight of Angels” and you will have a bird’s eye view of the falls and all the elephants and hippos swimming in the pools above the Gorge. Afterwards you have the whole day free to relax and explore the area. Optional Activities include: Bungee Jumping, Walking with Lions. Swimming above or below the falls, Canoeing and Elephant Riding- the options are endless (0-50 km)

Day 14: Victoria Falls to Chobe, Botswana
Highlights: Chobe River Safari- Thousands of Elephants

Today you take a short ride over the Zimbabwe border and into Botswana again. Your destination: Chobe National Park. Enjoy a relaxing afternoon at your lodge overlooking the Chobe River. Later this afternoon we have booked you  Big 5 Boat Safari into Chobe National Park. This is the only National Park in Africa where you can see the entire BIG 5 from the water. Enjoy a cold drink while floating along the Chobe River. You will literally see 1000’s of elephant as they come down to the river to drink, swim and play in the mud! End your day with another amazing African Sunset. (+-146km)

Day 15 Chobe to Nata (Makgadigadi Salt Pans) (+-370km)
Highlights: Makgadigadi Salt Pans

Botswana is the wildest country in Africa. There are no fences and wildlife roams free. As you ride along today- have a look out for elephants on the side of the road! They are very common along this stretch of road. In the early afternoon you will arrive at your lodge in Nata, on the edge of the Makgadigadi Salt Pans. Later you enjoy a Game Drive out onto the Pans- spotting wildlife as you go and enjoying the solitude and beauty of these wide open salt flats.

Day 16: Nata to Groblersbrug, South Africa (+-450km)
Highlights: Limpopo River

Today you ride further South through Botswana and back into South Africa again where you will spend a last night on the Limpopo River. Here you can relax and unwind with beautiful views over the River Paradise or take part in numerous optional activities on offer including game drives, game walks or a predator experience.

Day 17: Groblersbrug  to Pretoria (+-370km)
Highlight: relaxing ride

Today is a nice relaxing ride back to Sama Tours in Pretoria. You will arrive back in the early afternoon and will have a chance to unpack your panniers before we transfer you to your hotel for a final night in Pretoria.

Day 18: End of Tour

90% of this tour takes place on tarmac roads. The dirt roads are good hard-packed dirt. However, there are some long riding days and long border crossing. Some areas we visit are very rural and the roads sometimes have lots of potholes and other hazards. Need to be a confident rider.
This tour takes places 50% on tar roads and 50% on dirt roads. You need to be an experienced rider both on and off the pavement and have completed at least an intermediate riding course on a big Adventure bike- or have a lot of experience riding adventure bikes in your own country
This ride is suitable for most motorcyclists. 99% of the ride is on good tarmac roads. There are also some exciting off road options on good hard packed gravel roads. Daily distances are relatively short ( >450km) , there are rest days scheduled regularly and there are no long border crossings.
