The 18 Day South African Motorcycle Safari

Starting in Cape Town  and ending in Pretoria , this motorcycle Tour takes in all the best Riding that South Africa, the Garden Route, Lesotho and Swaziland have on offer.

Starting in Cape Town our mother City we ride miles and miles of beautiful ocean roads to Cape point and Cape Agulhas- the Southern Most tip of Africa. We stop off to see Penguins living on the beach and ride incredible mountain passes of the Cape Winelands

We then ride on famous Route 62 into the Karoo Desert, stop in at Ronnies Sex shop. We spend 2 Nights in Oudtshoorn- the ostrich capital of South Africa, where we ride the best tar and gravel mountain passes that South Africa has to offer including the world famous Swartberg Pass

We meet up the ocean in Knysna, and then ride into the Garden route National Park and spend the night in Ocean front villas.

Our next stop is Addo Elephant National Park. Here the Elephant is King and we enjoy an open vehicle Big 5 safari in the BUSH.

We then head north into the Mountainous Kingdwom of Lesotho where we enjoy riding the Alps of Africa. We have a rest day in Semonkong Village in a place where time stood still to meet the Basotho people, admire the Matseluyne Falls and enjoy all Lesotho has on offer before riding back into South Africa Again.

Here we ride the Beautiful Drakensberg Mountains, Golden Gate National Park and then visit Nambiti Game Reserve for a luxury Safari Experience before riding up into Swaziland- to enjoy the colorful Swazi culture and hospitality.

Our Next stop is Bikers Paradise in Mpumalanga. Here we visit waterfalls, awe inspiring view points and ride twisting mountain passes  around the largest Green Canyon in the world. Our last safari of the tour is into the WORLD famous Kruger National Park before we take the Scenic Route to Pretoria where our tour ends on Day 18

Day 0: Arrive in Cape Town, South Africa

Welcome to South Africa. A friendly Sama Tours representative will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel in Cape Town. We do recommend arriving a couple of days early to relax and get over any jet lag you may have. Cape Town is Such a beautiful City with so much to see and do! This afternoon we will see out the motorcycle and have a detailed pre-tour briefing before going out to celebrate the beginning of our Exciting Motorcycle Adventure at a fantastic waterfront restaurant. Enjoy getting to fellow travelers over good food and wine.

Day 1:  Cape Town – Cape Point – Cape Winelands (180 km)
Highlights: Coastal Roads, Mountain Passes

Today is a highlight of the tour – you explore beautiful coastal roads to Cape Point Peninsula and then head into the beautiful Cape Winelands over exciting mountain passes and sleep Surrounded by beautiful wine farms. Tonight, you enjoy tasting South African wine. (B,L,D)

Day 2: Cape Winelands to Cape Agulhas (+-300km) 
Highlights: The Southern Most Tip of Africa

Today you make your way over the famous Franschoek pass and ride beautiful coastal roads through the Cape Overberg. You stop off to see the Penguin colony living on the beach in Bettys Bay and then make your way to Cape Agulhas- the Southern tip of Africa. Situated at 34.8 degrees south and 20 degrees east – this is also the point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. Tonight you dine at a famous local restaurant – with world-class fresh seafood (B,L,D)

Day 3: Cape Agulhas to Oudtshoorn (375km)
Highlights: Route 62, Ostriches

From the Southern Tip of Africa, they make their way over the famous Tradouw pass to Route 62. Route 62 is South Africa’s answer to Route 66 in America- it is a beautiful secondary road that winds its way through the Mighty Karoo Desert, through small quirky towns and villages. They make a few interesting stops (including Ronnies Sex Shop) and arrive in Oudtshoorn in the last afternoon. Oudtshoorn is the Ostrich Capital of South Africa. Tonight, you enjoy a traditional ostrich braai (BBQ). (B,L,D)

Day 4: Rest day Oudtshoorn (0-250km)
Highlights: Optional Ride up Swartberg Pass, Cango Caves, Ostrich farms

Day 4 is a rest day, but there is so much to see and do. They will have a guided tour of the Cango Caves with its beautiful stalactites and stalagmites and a tour of a working Ostrich farm – where you will get to feed, touch, and hug Ostriches. For those that would like to do some more exciting dirt riding there will be an optional ride over the famous Swartberg Pass. This is a bucket list ride for Adventure Bikers the world over. This Afternoon, relax and enjoy the warm Karoo Hospitality that this area is known for. (B,D)

Day 5: Oudtshoorn Storms River Mouth Via Knysna  (150-300km)
Highlights: Mountain Passes, Knsyna Heads

Today we make our way down to the Indian Ocean, where we will be spending the night at the Knysna Waterfront and we visit the famous Knysna Heads. En route you can choose to ride Tar over Outeniqua Pass or the gravel road over Price Alfred Pass- Both options are breathtaking! Welcome to bikers paradise!   After an enjoyable lunch with views over the Knysna Heads we make our way to Storms River Mouth. This afternoon you can enjoy a short walk to the breathtaking suspension bridges hanging between the sea cliffs. (B,L,D)

Day 6 Storms River Mouth to Addo Elephant Park (+-250 km)
Highlights: Big 5 Safari

We have the morning free to enjoy Storms River Mouth and then we make our way to ADDO on the Edge of the National Park. This afternoon we make our way to Addo Elephant National Park.  On the way will pass by the Famous Surfer town of Jeffreys Bay. Addo is famous for its large herds of elephants and other exciting wildlife.  (B,L,D)

Day 7: Rest Day Addo Elephant National Park (0-50km)
Highlights: Half Day BIG 5 Safari

Up with the sunrise- we enjoy a Guided Game drive into Addo Elephant park- famous for large herds of elephants as well other other exciting wildlife. You have the rest of the day free to relax at our beautiful Lodge (B,D)

Day 08: Addo Elephant Park to Aliwal North (+- 440 km)
Highlights: Orange River

Today we enjoy a relaxing ride through South African Farmland as we make our way to Aliwal North just south of Lesotho. We spend the night in a beautiful guesthouse on the Orange River (B,L,D)

Day 09: Aliwal North to Semonkong, Lesotho (+- 290 km)
Highlights: The Alps of Africa

Today is a major highlight of the trip. Today, you enter Lesotho! This country is completely landlocked and every part of it is located in the mountains giving it the title- The Highest Country in the world. Riding here is like riding in the ALPS of Africa- amazing steep mountain passes, switchbacks, and hundreds of twistys. In the later afternoon, you will arrive at Semonkong Lodge – your home for the next 2 Nights. This lodge is located in a Village where it feels like time stood still. The main form of transportation here is horseback. This village is a hive of activity and a magical place to truly experience this beautiful country. Tonight you enjoy a cold Maluti Beer and amazing food in the Duck and Donkey Tavern. (B,L,D)

Semonkong Falls

Day 10: Rest Day Lesotho (+- 0-50 km)
Highlights: Waterfalls, Mountains, Village Life, Donkey Pub Crawl

Semonkong is a perfect place for a rest day- there is so much to see and do. You may wish to attempt the “Worlds Highest Abseil” 186 Meters- over the breathtaking Matlesunyane Falls. Other optional activities include Fly Fishing (In season) Horseback riding, 4 x 4 Tours,  Hiking, Village tours, or our favorite: a Donkey Pub Crawl. Ride local donkeys into town and visit local “Shebeens” (Bar/Taverns) for a truly local experience. (B, D)

Lesotho Herdsman

Day 11: Semonkong to Clarens (+- 276-350 km)
Highlights: Clarens, Golden Gate National Park

We enjoy some more breathtaking mountain passes as we make our way out of Lesotho and back into South Africa again. This afternoon we will arrive in the Artists Village of Clarens. This village is surrounded by Golden Sandstone Cliffs. Enjoy a walk around the cozy little shops, taste some beer at the local brewery and tonight we enjoy a lovely pub meal (B,L, D)

Day 12: Clarens- Golden Gate- Nambiti Game Reserve  (+- 210km)
Highlights: Golden Gate National Park, Nambiti BIG 5

Our Morning starts off with a beautiful ride down through the Golden Gate National Park to the Drakensberg mountains. From here we head inland through Kwazulu Natal to Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve where we enjoy a sunset Safari- Look out for Lions, Elephants and Leopards. Tonight we enjoy dinner around a crackling fire before retiring for the night in our Luxury Safari Accommodation (B,L,D)

Day 13: Nambiti to Eswatini (Swaziland) (+-312 km)
Highlights: Mountainous Kingdom of Swaziland

Today we then make our way up north into our 3rd Country of the trip- Swaziland. We travel up north into Mountains surrounding the capital city of Mbabane. The Swazi people are known as some of the friendliest in Africa! Here we spend the night in Ezulwini Valley- Meaning: “The Valley of Heaven” (B,L,D)

Day 14: Swaziland to Hazyview  (+- 280 km)
Highlights: Bikers Paradise

Today we make our way back into South Africa. We enjoy some beautiful riding and in the afternoon we will arrive in Hazyview. This are is known to local bikers as bikers paradise! It is also on the edge of the world famous Kruger National Park. We have 3 Nights here to enjoy the best riding and wildlife sighting in South Africa. (B,L,D)

Day 15: Half Day Safari- Kruger National Park (+-50km)
Highlights: Safari, African wildlife

Today we will bid goodbye to the motorcycles and board a game viewing Safari vehicle which will transport us into the Kruger National Park. This world famous wildlife reserve is home to the BIG 5 and is roughly the size of a small country. The vastness of the park allows ample opportunity to view wild animals in their natural habitat. We will have a full morning to spot lions, elephants, birds and many different species of animals. In the Afternoon we will return to our hotel in Hazyview where we can relax around the pool or take part in any of the optional activities in the area.

Day 16: Hazyview – Panorama Route- Hazyview (250km)
Highlights: God’s Window, Bourkes Luck Potholes, The Three Rondavels, Waterfalls, Magical Views Sites.

Today we explore the Panorama Route- area known to Local Bikers as “Motorcycle Paradise”. The roads here are beautiful and curvy, and there are so many great view points, rock formations and waterfalls along the way. The route includes stops at Bourkes luck potholes, The Three Rondavels, and Gods Window as well as a waterfall or two. Tonight we enjoy dining on the banks of the Sabie River, lookikng out for Hippos and Elephants (B,L,D)

The Panorama Route

Day 17: Hazyview to Pretoria (400km)
Highlights: Long Tom Pass, Pilgrims Rest, Dullstroom

It is our last riding day! We enjoy riding the breathtaking Long Tom pass with its switch back curves and have lunch in Dullstroom- The highest town in Mpumalanga. We will arrive back in Pretoria in the early Afternoon. Tonight we go out to celebrate the end of a once in a lifetime tour in one of Pretoria’s Best Restaurants (B,L,D)

Sadly your tour of South Africa has come to an end. We guarantee that you will take home loads of awesome photographs and fond memories of South Africa the warm people you have met. Transfers will be arranged to the airport. (B)
